CraftMarketingTutor: Tell us about your website.
Cindy: It’s a blog based site where you can learn all about making polymer clay beads. There are hundreds of articles and thousands of helpful comments that will teach you everything you need to know about working with polymer clay, from which brand to start with, to how to get a professional looking finish.

CraftMarketingTutor: What do you feel visitors most enjoy at your website?
Cindy: I think what visitors enjoy the most about the blog is the supportive community. You can ask any question you like and either myself or one of the many readers will give you an answer. It is a comfortable environment where everyone, of every skill level, can feel at home.

CraftMarketingTutor: What inspired you to start this craft business?
Cindy: I was a craft teacher in the Night School environment for many years. I could see the shift towards online learning happening and wanted to become web based. Video tutorials are a nice way for students to learn no matter where they are, in the comfort of their own homes.

CraftMarketingTutor: What has been the most fun about running it?
Cindy: Being able to continually interact with students which was not possible in the standard live classroom setting. There is so much we can learn from one another. I can also get feedback and suggestions from everyone, in order to teach the topics that people want to learn the most. Before, I always had to take a guess at what might be a popular subject and hope for the best. Now I know exactly what to teach because everyone tells me exactly what they want.

CraftMarketingTutor: How long have you been in business?
Cindy: With the online part of my polymer clay business, it is coming up to 2 years now.

CraftMarketingTutor: What is your best selling item?
Cindy: Monthly membership to the Polymer Clay Video Library. It’s affordable at less than $4 per month and each member gets tremendous value, receiving 4 video tutorials and 4 color mixing recipes each month. Plus if your signed up on for the newsletter you get even more free color recipes.

CraftMarketingTutor: What is your coolest, newest product?
Cindy: I recently invented a new faster, easier way to make a graduated color blend (Skinner Blend) which I call the Teardrop Blend. It takes out all the complicated cutting and measuring and still delivers the same fabulous results. Beginners who had trouble making Multi-Colored Skinner Blends before, now have no problems making the Teardrop Blend. No matter how many colors they would like to blend. That’s pretty cool!

CraftMarketingTutor: Is there anything else you would like to share about your craft business?
Cindy: One of the most exciting things about working with polymer clay is it’s unlimited possibilities. Given a few tips a child can make something decent with it. But given time and practice, amazing museum quality artwork can be made with the stuff. You can make it look like stone, glass, leather, metal, bone, ivory, gems and more. You can roll it, cut it, ink it, drill it, paint it, fold it, extrude it, blend it, mold it, sculpt it and more. It seems to be only limited by ones own imagination!

  • Thank you so much for the interview!

It’s so much fun to make polymer clay beads that is sure is nice to be able to share that passion with everyone. I hope you all get the chance to try it someday.

It’s a great way to personalize your handmade jewelry and can be an excellent business for people who choose to take it beyond a hobby.

Be careful though, it is pretty addicting! You may find once you start bead making, that you never have time to do housework anymore! :-)
